Enjoy Your Worries
This is my Senior Photography thesis at Umass Dartmouth.
I am interested in how women are overwhelmed with everything that they have to do by trying to be everything to everybody, as they perform the multiple roles in their lives. Women play many different roles in today’s contemporary society. Along with the traditional roles of caregiver, wife and mother, there is also the pressure to perform the roles of worker and provider. This project looks at the inner struggle that many women go through to do it all, as well as the anxiety and stress that performing these roles, puts on relationships.
With these photographs I want to show the inner conflict, stress and emotions that these traditional and nontraditional roles have on women. Omitting the women’s heads in the photographs makes them less about an individual and more about every woman. The situations that the woman is placed in, such as being covered in food, laundry, or having kids hanging off her, emphasizes the overwhelmingness of all the roles that engulf her. The fact that she has the confidence and strength to perform these roles as she feels she must, shows how strong and complex a woman she really is.
The format of the photographs is meant to resemble fashion photography, this gives the photographs the feel of a typical woman’s advertisement.
